MV Xlendi
MV Xlendi was laid down in Denmark by Helsingor Vearft in 1955 as a RORO train Ferry, the ship is 80m in length and 13m beam. Originally her name was MV Helsingor and she worked in fjords of Denmark from 1955-1987. In 1987 she came to Malta to work as a cargo ferry and was renamed MV Royal Sheeba. at the end of 1988 she returned to Denmark to be renamed the MV Borgshorn. She continued to work as a ferry in Denmark until she was sold to The Gozo Channel Line in 1990 at which point she returned to Malta and was renamed MV Xlendi. She worked as a ferry between Malta and Gozo until 1999 when she was taken out of service. It was at this point that the Maltese diving community came together to have her scuttled as the first artificial reef on Gozo.
She was scuttled on November 12th 1999 and, unfortunately, the operation went wrong with her rolling down the reef coming to a rest hull up on the sandy bottom at 45m.
Over the years the superstructure has been pushed into the hull and she became a "widow maker", today penetration of the wreck is strictly prohibited. However with its 80 meter upturned hull and a 3meter propeller at each end there is plenty to see on this dive with abundant life and plenty of places to look into the wreck.
